Carbon footprint label, also known as Carbon Label or carbon emission label, is aimed to label the carbon emissions of products and services. It implied the sum of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) converted from the greenhouse gas produced by the stages of life cycle, which is the production process from raw materials to the manufacturing, distribution, sales, consumer use and waste recycling.
The world is moving ahead to be a low-carbon society. A number of countries such as Britain, the United States, Japan, Korea, China, Sweden, are actively developing carbon labeling policies. Carbon Trust, established in 2001 by the British Government, is the pioneer which launched the world's first carbon label “the Carbon Reduction Label” in 2006.
The implementation of carbon-labeling system could quantify the carbon emission of the product in the life cycle. It assists the manufacturer to reduce the carbon emissions by improving the production line, also the consumers to choose a product by focusing on carbon footprint.
Since the Carbon Trust launched the first carbon label in 2006, variety of carbon labels have been developed by the government department or civil society organizations in the worldwide and the numbers of carbon labels schemes launched cannot be evaluated.
In terms of the benefits gained by the implementation Carbon label, with the experience in cooperating with the 20 British companies to implement carbon labeling, Carbon Trust concluded that: "The measurement of the carbon footprint reflect the sources and the “hot spot” with high impact of carbon emissions, so the enterprises could identify their high carbon reduction efficiency and cost-saving strategy accordingly. During the measurement process, the enterprises can also" strengthen the relationship with suppliers, and develop better management practices. "
For example: A study found that fruit smoothies from “Innocent” accounted 80% of GHG emissions in raw materials, packaging and manufacturing stages, conversely the impact of the transport part is relatively small. This result is subverted to the traditional “food miles” concept. Therefore, the company targeted the carbon reduction strategy to packaging stage and replaced with using 100% recycled plastic bottles. This strategy reduces 20% of raw materials and saves cost, thus reducing 55% of the bottle's carbon emissions in the manufacturing process.
Another example, “Boots” recognized that the major carbon emissions of their “Botanics shampoo” were from the stages of raw materials and distribution (excluding consumers). They aimed to
|
1.
|
Increase the proportion of plastic bottles recycled material to 30%, and |
|
2.
|
Re-design distribution network, so that individual products can be sent directly to the store, thus reducing the life-cycle carbon emissions by 20%. Carbon Trust's research also indicates that products with carbon labels may have additional benefits include: |
| |
|
| 1. |
Disclosure of information gained the comparison and awareness from the consumer or customer, therefore prompting enterprises to create greater opportunities for emissions reduction. |
| 2. |
To create product differentiation. |
| 3. |
To strengthen the company's brand and reputation. |

Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong) Limited (FXHK) is a leading provider and system integrator in knowledge and document management solutions in Hong Kong. We have been adopting green procurement best practice through the implementation of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The objective is to encourage internal users in applying the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) at each phase of the material life-cycle so as to ensure the procurement and purchasing activities can be more environmentally responsible, as far as possible.
We are working closely with the manufacturers and suppliers to prevent or control the inclusion of hazardous substances in the products provided and used in the on-site services at our offices. Since the implementation of the Air Pollution Control (Volatile Organic Compounds) Regulation enacted in April 2007, corresponding parties are required to comply with the regulation and relevant requirements.
Apart from that, paper supply is a focus area and we have long been concerned about the issue of deforestation and the impact on indigenous peoples. In 2006, FXHK followed the corporate direction to survey and confirm all of our suppliers in Japan and Asia Pacific were complying with the Environmental Health and Safety Requirements for Paper Procurement which it established in 2004. And, FXHK has further obtained the certification with Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody (FSC CoC) since 2007 and Hong Kong Green Label Certificate since 2010 for its compliance throughout the paper supply operation.
In order to promote Green Purchasing to our stakeholders, FXHK has been supplying eco-friendly electronic and electrical products which is the first in the industry with ‘Productwi$e - Class of Excellence’ since December 2009. The product life cycle of Color Multifunction Machines have been assessed with significant environmental performance improved compared with previous generation.
